Last year, Robyn Chachula emailed me and asked whether I would contribute to one of her books. Naturally, I jumped at the chance. You all know Robyn, right? I mean seriously. We love her. How could I say no? It didn’t matter that I was working on 4 books. I wanted to be a part of anything dear Robyn does. So, I set about designing an afghan for her. Of course I chose Tunisian crochet. Did you expect anything different?

Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists. I especially love “Starry Night“. Did you know there was a Doctor Who episode which featured Vincent Van Gogh? That was an awesome episode.
This afghan pattern, made completely in Tunisian crochet except for the last two rounds of the border, is published in the book by Robyn Chachula called “Unexpected Afghans“. At first, that may seem like an unusual name. Making an afghan is anything but unexpected, right? But, my take of it is that the afghans aren’t your usual afghans. For mine in particular, it felt like I was making the fabric for a sweater. Gorgeous, yummy, drapey fabric. The unexpected part comes in because it was actually an afghan.
Unexpected also for me was that apparently my kitty, Lexie the Super Cat, prefers Lion Brand Wool-Ease over all other yarns. I had to cover up the project and the yarn every night to keep him out of it.
Also unexpected was that my daughter wanted to learn Tunisian crochet after seeing this afghan. She is a wonderful knitter and didn’t have a lot of interest in crochet. (Who wants to do the same thing as their mother? LOL) But, she was completely inspired by this afghan.
Hop over to Robyn’s blog to get the links to the websites of the other designers in this book as well. So fun to see these beautiful creations by some wonderful designers, all in one place. Enjoy!

June 30, 2012 at 8:15 pm
I absolutely love Tunisian crochet and afghans. The ripple effect makes it unusual in crochet. I need to get past the simple stitch, the knit and reverse knit stitch. That’s all I know how to do at this point. But i am learning
June 30, 2012 at 8:16 pm
Your afghan for Robyn’s book is gorgeous! Love the colors you chose too!
June 30, 2012 at 8:30 pm
So glad that you have a pattern in Robyn’s new book! I love your designs! This afghan is beautiful.

Rippled tunisian crochet, what an interesting idea. Starry Night is a favourite of mine too
June 30, 2012 at 8:44 pm
I am really new to Tunisian even though I learned the basic afghan stitch long ago…. I love your work and Robins. I enjoy reading from both of you. Anxious to see the other works in this new book. Need to expand my dimuative library…..
Thanks for the opportunity.
June 30, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Even as a non-designing crocheter, it is interesting to hear where design inspiration comes from!
June 30, 2012 at 9:15 pm

June 30, 2012 at 10:37 pm
Wow! Starry Night is one of my favorite pieces of artwork. I love how you’ve captured it in afghan form. I’ll be adding this to my library for sure. Great work, Kim!
June 30, 2012 at 11:02 pm
Absolutely devine afghan. I think I’m going to have to make one of those VERY soon as long as I don’t have to cut off one of my ears (get it – Van Gogh?) LOL

The Starry Nights Afghan design is just breathtaking. Plus, I also love Vincent Van Gogh’s work and Starry Nights is one of my favorite pieces of his. And I love all shades of blue (especially combined with purple). Finally, I’m determined to learn Tunisian crochet this year and this afghan gives me great inspiration to do so as quickly as possible.
July 1, 2012 at 8:37 am
What a beautiful afghan. It does look like it’s made from a huge sweater.
Also makes me wish it was winter and I had it here to snuggle under.
July 1, 2012 at 8:39 am
Wonderful afghan! I just love the colors
July 1, 2012 at 8:47 am

All your patterns are so beautiful, and so easy to understand. You’re great Kim, and I love the look of this new design.
July 1, 2012 at 9:43 am
This kinda makes me think of the knit feather & fan design, which I would never have the patience to make an afghan with even though I’m a fairly fast knitter. Just getting back into Tunisian, which I did as a teenager in the 70′s–not much offered back then
Thank you for sharing this with us!
July 1, 2012 at 10:03 am
this is a very beautiful afghan and very unexpected that it’s done in tunisian. i have always loved it.
July 1, 2012 at 10:03 am

July 1, 2012 at 10:29 am
I have just rediscovered Tunisian crochet. I vaguely remember making a blue scarf when I was in high school. Now I’m ready to move on to bigger things…like an afghan!!!!
July 1, 2012 at 10:29 am
I love the texture and the way the waves draws the eye across the afghan.
July 1, 2012 at 10:39 am
This has been on my wishlist for a while. I’d like to make at least half of these afghans!
July 5, 2012 at 1:19 am

Well done, but then with your talents, I expect nothing less.
LOVE your work!
July 1, 2012 at 1:38 pm
Kim, this is a beautiful afghan. I especially love the colors, since blue is my favorite color (any/all shades of blue). I would love to win this book, as I am a member of your groups and follow your work for crochet, knitting, and gardening.
You are an all around, down to earth kinda woman. I live in Kansas and the weather here is crazy, so the afghans work quite well. I can make the same thing 100′s of times and no two are exactly alike. I do not read patterns (never learned how), but usually I look at the picture, study it and come up with something that looks like it. Fingers and toes crossed on winning this book.
Love your work, keep it up. You have a world of followers and we all appreciate your designs.
July 1, 2012 at 1:43 pm
Very pretty. The blues really do remind me of Van Gogh.
July 1, 2012 at 1:46 pm
I’ve seen previews of this book and it is awsome. Would love a copy. Lots of interesting afghans.
July 1, 2012 at 2:19 pm
Thanks for the chance to win. I can’t wait to see this book. Tunisian crochet is next on my list to learn. I have seen so many great projects with this technique but don’t know the first think about it. I just signed up for a class to learn and hopefully I can get enough skills to make an attempt at your pattern!–Kate M–kateyhbf@gmail.com

Awesome, another Whoovian!!

I loved that episode as well and the afghan definitely speaks to me in Van Gogh’s colours!
I’ve dabbled in Tunisian, even bought the hooks with cables, but haven’t actually sat down and seriously figured it out… yet!
